Wow it works | Center of Gravity

center of gravity

In this wow it works activity , kids learn about center of gravity or mass on an incline plane . What happens to a ball on an incline plane ? It rolls down of course . But why? Here we get kids to build the gravity robot that literally “walk” down the slope . To be able to move , we first need to shift the center of gravity . But that would cause some imbalance , and that is precisely what happen to the gravity robot

Wow it works| Ramps and spirals

wow it works ramps and spirals

The wow it works program for ramps and spirals actually started of as a Gravity project for kids . We wanted to show kids a ball rolling down a ramp or inclined plane and we wanted kids to guess what might happen to the ball if we increased the angle of the plane . With the understanding of what the incline plane might do to the ball , we wanted kids to suggest ways and means to slow down a rolling ball . What are the possible solutions can kids come up with ?

Wow it works | Balanced dragonfly

This wow it works program for kids is also about center of mass (Gravity) .

Here we have photographs of a bird and also a dragonfly  in equilibrium . The bird  is something that we bought when we were in Australia in 2002 while the  balanced dragonfly , which is made of bamboo is from ZhangJiaJie , China , during one of our holidays in  2011 . We are not sure if these are available locally in Singapore , but you can made them yourself using cardboard . Noticed the similarities between the 2 creatures !!

Wow it works | Gravity robots

wow it works gravity robots

The “wow it works” gravity robot was inspired by the book , titled “Robotics” written by Kathy Ceceri . There are about 20 robotic  projects in this book . The book is  meant for kids age 9 to 12 years old . It is an excellent book to introduce kids to the world of robotics . The only problem  is that we can’t find the book in Singapore , except buying one on-line . Luckily after a few calls to the regular bookstores in Singapore , there is only ONE available at Kinokuniya at Orchard . So we picked up the ONE and only copy  ( oops .. sorry folks , you have to wait for them to replenish unless you buy it on-line )
